# Russian Cursive Ъ ъ (Hard sign): How to Write It

Cursive ъ is a cursive ь with a short tick or hook at the top left. It is rare and appears only inside words, before е, ё, ю or я. No sound of its own. It marks a small break so the next vowel keeps its y-glide: подъезд is "pod-yezd".

## Sound

No sound of its own. It marks a small break so the next vowel keeps its y-glide: подъезд is "pod-yezd".

## How to write cursive ъ, step by step

1.  Start at the midline with a short tick that goes left, then a hook turning down.
2.  Draw a straight downstroke to the baseline.
3.  Without lifting, make a small closed loop to the right at the bottom.
4.  Exit from the loop to the next letter.

## The capital Ъ

A capital Ъ appears only in all-caps text, since no Russian word starts with it; it is the same shape enlarged.

The small bottom loop flows directly into the vowel that always follows (е, ё, ю, я).

-   ъ / ь: ь has no tick at the top. The tick is the whole difference: съел (ate) vs сел (sat down) shows how much it matters.
