By [Daily Cyrillic](/about) · Updated 31 Oct 2026

## Sound

No sound of its own. It softens the consonant before it, like a light y-glide: мать is "mat'".

## How to write cursive ь, step by step

1. Start with a short upward lead-in from the previous letter to the midline.
2. Draw a straight downstroke to the baseline.
3. Curve right and up into a small loop that closes on the stroke at about half height.
4. Exit with a short stroke to the right.

## The capital Ь

Capital Ь appears only in all-caps text and is the same shape enlarged.

## How it connects to other letters

ь joins on both sides. At the end of a word the exit stroke is kept short.

## Letters it is confused with

- ь / б: Cursive б has the same loop but a tall stroke rising far above the midline; ь stays at letter height.

- ь / ъ: ъ adds a tick at the top left. ь is far more common, so a plain loop-and-stroke is almost always ь.

## Example words in cursive

Read the cursive word first, then check the print form and meaning.

Example words in cursive
| Cursive | Print | Transliteration | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| день | день | den' | day |
| соль | соль | sol' | salt |
| пальто | пальто | pal'tó | coat |
| конь | конь | kon' | horse |

## Common mistakes

- Reading it as a b sound.
- Ignoring it in speech; the softening changes meaning, as in брат (brother) vs брать (to take).
