# Russian Cursive Я я (Ya): How to Write It

Cursive я starts with a small loop on the left that swings into a straight downstroke, like a handwritten a whose bowl is open at the bottom. It never looks like a reversed R in handwriting. ya as in "yard"; after a consonant it softens that consonant. On its own, я means "I".

## Sound

ya as in "yard"; after a consonant it softens that consonant. On its own, я means "I".

## How to write cursive я, step by step

1.  Start with a short lead-in from the baseline up to the left side.
2.  Draw a small loop up to the midline, curving right over the top.
3.  Pull a straight downstroke from the midline to the baseline.
4.  Exit with a hook to the right.

## The capital Я

Capital Я is a tall stem with a loop on the upper left and a lead-in stroke from the bottom left; it does not look like a mirrored R either.

## How it connects to other letters

The lead-in stroke comes from the baseline, so я joins naturally from the previous letter; the exit hook connects forward.

## Letters it is confused with

-   я / а: а has a closed round bowl; я has a small open loop that starts from below. In моя vs мама, check whether the bowl is closed.
    
-   я / print Я: Learners expect a backwards R. In cursive the leg disappears and only the loop plus stem remain.
