At a busy café, a short order often leads to several quick questions: which size, which milk, eating here or taking away? Learn those choices together instead of memorising a long drinks menu. This lesson covers a coffee and bakery order from joining the queue to collecting the correct cup. The examples give you simple ways to ask for a change and clarify an ingredient before paying for something you cannot use.

## Build an order in a useful sequence

Start with the drink, then add size and any changes. Мне лате́, пожа́луйста is enough to begin, and ма́ленький or большо́й supplies the size when asked. Staff may list several cup volumes rather than using those adjectives, so practise numbers with миллили́тров. Do not rush to include every detail in one sentence. A clear order followed by one clear answer is often easier for both people at a busy counter.

## Hear the difference between here and takeaway

The question С собо́й и́ли здесь? is worth recognising immediately. С собо́й means to take away; здесь means here. A takeaway cup may be called стака́нчик, while a ceramic cup is ча́шка. Add кры́шка when you need a lid. Practise the staff question alongside your answer, so a familiar phrase does not disappear when someone says it quickly. Repeat the order number if the café uses numbered pickups.

## Ask a specific ingredients question

For a pastry, С чем э́та бу́лочка? asks about the filling. For a drink, ask whether milk or syrup is included rather than relying on the name alone. Без са́хара is a preference, but it does not establish that a food contains no sugar at all. If an ingredient has health consequences for you, explain the exact restriction and check staff understanding. Vocabulary practice helps communication; it cannot establish how food has been prepared.

## Repair a small mistake without restarting

When the wrong cup appears, identify the difference: Я проси́л без молока́ or Я проси́ла без молока́ means you asked for no milk. Choose the past-tense form that fits the speaker. Show your receipt if that makes the order easier to find. Rehearse one mistaken order with a friend: they hand over a large takeaway coffee, while you asked for a small one to drink inside. Solve only that difference before moving on.

## Words and phrases to try

An accent marks the stressed vowel. Transliteration is a reading aid; ё carries its own stress.

## Questions about this situation

### How do I order something to go?

Add с собо́й to the order, or use it as a complete answer when the barista asks where you will drink it. На ме́сте is another way to describe having something on the premises, but здесь is an easy beginner answer.

### What is a natural way to ask about a pastry?

С чем э́та бу́лочка? asks what the bun is filled with. If you cannot name the pastry, point politely and use э́та. Listen for the ingredient in the answer and confirm it if the distinction matters for your order.

### Should I memorise every coffee name first?

Learn your own usual drink and the questions around it before expanding the menu. Size, milk, takeaway and payment are useful across many drinks. Practising these choices gives you a working café conversation with a relatively small vocabulary.
