A gym conversation is often brief: someone needs to know whether you are using a machine, you want to find the changing room, or an instructor asks whether you have tried an exercise before. Learn to answer those small questions clearly. This lesson focuses on access, equipment and polite turn-taking. It helps you communicate about a session; it does not replace an instructor's explanation of safe technique or an individual training plan.

## Explain what kind of visit you want

Ра́зовое посеще́ние means a single visit, while абонеме́нт is a membership or pass. Ask what a pass includes rather than assuming classes and facilities are all covered. A пробное заня́тие is a trial session. Practise asking about one specific class and its time, then repeat the reply aloud. This helps distinguish booking a place from merely learning that a class exists. You may need a separate reservation even when admission to the gym is covered.

## Take turns without sounding abrupt

Вы ещё занима́етесь? asks whether someone is still using the equipment. Ско́лько подхо́дов оста́лось? asks how many sets are left. Neither question demands that the person stop immediately. If you would like to alternate, ask Мо́жно по о́череди? and wait for agreement. Learn the answer as well as the question: ещё два means two more. That short reply is easy to miss if all your practice has been producing full sentences yourself.

## Ask for an explanation you can follow

Покажи́те, пожа́луйста asks someone to show you. Add как настро́ить тренаже́р if you need help adjusting a machine. If you do not understand an instruction, say so before trying to copy the movement. A useful phrase is Я не понима́ю, повтори́те поме́дленнее. The vocabulary names the task but cannot establish which movement or load is appropriate for you. Keep technique questions with a qualified instructor and communicate discomfort clearly rather than guessing.

## Build a practical session rehearsal

Prepare a short sequence around a real visit: ask about a single admission, find the locker room, check whether a machine is free and thank someone for helping. Then change one detail, such as the class time or the number of sets remaining. Use a light object at home to make the spoken actions memorable without turning the language exercise into a workout. In your set, include request and response together so you recognise polite refusals as well as agreement.

## Words and phrases to try

An accent marks the stressed vowel. Transliteration is a reading aid; ё carries its own stress.

## Questions about this situation

### How do I ask if a machine is free?

Э́тот тренаже́р свобо́ден? asks whether the machine is available. If someone is next to it, Вы ещё занима́етесь? may be clearer. Wait for an answer instead of assuming that an unattended towel or bottle tells you who is using the equipment.

### What is the difference between a set and a repetition?

Подхо́д is a set and повторе́ние is a repetition. Ско́лько подхо́дов? and Ско́лько повторе́ний? therefore ask different things. Pair each word with a simple example so you can recognise an instructor's answer without confusing the two numbers.

### How do I say I am here for the first time?

Я здесь впервы́е means this is your first time here. Follow with a specific request such as showing you the changing room or explaining how to book a class. It gives staff useful context without requiring a long account of your training history.
