Before a hike, useful conversation is concrete: how far the route is, whether there is water, what everyone is carrying and when to turn back. On the trail, you need short phrases for a break, a missed turning or a change in the weather. This lesson helps you discuss those plans with Russian-speaking companions. It teaches the language of an outing rather than assessing whether a route, campsite or weather condition is safe.
Agree on the route before discussing speed
Маршру́т is the planned route; тропа́ is the path you follow. Ask Како́й длины́ маршру́т? for its length and Ско́лько вре́мени займёт похо́д? for the expected duration. They are different questions, because a short steep route can take longer than an easy long one. Practise naming the start, destination and return plan. A shared written route makes it easier to notice when two people are describing different walks with similar place names.
Discuss equipment with specific objects
A рюкза́к is a backpack, a пала́тка a tent and a спа́льник a sleeping bag. When dividing equipment, ask Кто несёт пала́тку? instead of assuming someone has packed it. A list of objects is useful, but questions about who brings each item make it a conversation. Rehearse a short planning call in which one person has the tent and the other brings food. Then change one missing item and agree on the next action.
Speak up about pace and conditions
Дава́й сде́лаем переры́в proposes a break. Мне ну́жно идти́ медле́ннее says you need a slower pace without making a claim about anyone else's ability. If conditions change, distinguish an observation from a decision: начина́ется дождь describes rain beginning; дава́й вернёмся suggests turning back. Clear statements help companions understand your needs. The phrases alone cannot determine what to do in difficult terrain, so use the actual route information and appropriate local guidance.
Practise a route update instead of a perfect trip
Imagine you reach a fork and do not recognise the sign. Say where you are, ask which path is correct and repeat the agreed direction. On another round, one person needs water or wants to shorten the walk. These variations build language for changing a plan together. For flashcards, pair the word with the relevant action: fill the bottle, check the map, pack the sleeping bag. Concrete actions make outdoor vocabulary easier to recall than isolated equipment names.
